Short Story| BELIEVE

Note: I enjoyed writing short stories when I was younger. I have lost touch with writing stories over the past few years, this is my attempt at getting back at it.

She checked her phone again, her mind sprinting through the labyrinth of possibilities. She argued with all the fears in her mind, it wasn’t over yet – he would definitely reply. Her thoughts went back to their last conversation – she rewound through all the things she had said, her answers to his pressing questions. She wondered if she had expressed herself well enough, explained to him her dreams and life goals. It dawned upon her how important communication was in this situation. She hadn’t heard from him in the last 6 days – that was definitely a bad sign. He hadn’t taken this long after any of their previous discussions. She wondered if she had been overly demanding during their discussion – had she asked for too much? Why was he taking so long to make up his mind? If only she could read what was going on in his mind when they had met last. She knew he wouldn’t be taking this decision alone and there were other people whose approval he’d seek. She hoped he’d be able to convince them about her.

She tried distracting herself but Chandler, Monica and the gang couldn’t shake off the sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach. Sipping on her coffee, she replayed everything she had said. She hadn’t been too overbearing, demanding only what she believed she deserved. She had given up a lot for this but she truly believed it was worth all the effort she had put in.

She had spent the entire weekend in limbo, hardly able to sleep and the weak coffee was doing her no good. She had to take a nap but her mind was awry. She decided to do something she had not done in a long time – she decided to pray. She got down on her knees and prayed to whichever higher power was out there guiding her through her life. A sudden calm washed over her, her mind stopped taking laps and her heart was filled with warmth. She got under her bed covers to take that nap she needed. Just as she was dozing off, her phone beeped – it was from him.

She took a deep breath and opened the message – “Sorry for the late reply. Congratulations are in order – the job is yours. It took time to get back since I had to convince the board that you were worth all that you asked for during our discussion. Anyhow, I’ve mailed you your offer letter. Welcome aboard- youngest CMO in the history of our organization!”

PS: Let me know if you liked the story.
